Wolverhampton Society meeting

More Information (WCR FM is not responsible for external websites)

Join us to see a presentation by Steve Wootton from The Wolverhampton Astronomical Society.

The observatory was built around 1842 by the British astronomer John Wrottesley (1798-1867) in the grounds of Wrottesley Hall.

In 1841 Wrottesley inherited his father's title, becoming the 2nd Baron (Lord) Wrottesley, and the family estate. Wrottesley was one of the founding members of the Astronomical Society of London (1820), which became the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) in 1831. Wrottesley was RAS President (1841-1843) and President of the Royal Society (1854-1858).

The Wrottesley Crater on the Moon is named in his honour.

By the 1950s, only ruins were left where the observatory once stood.
