Shattered Dreams

Wolverhampton Art Gallery presents Shattered Dreams, the first institutional solo exhibition by Wolverhampton-born artist Shaqúelle Whyte.

Bringing together six dynamic largescale paintings created between 2023 and 2026, the exhibition showcases Whyte’s bold figurative painting style and vigorous mark-making.

Born in Wolverhampton in 2000, Shaqúelle Whyte is one of the leading young British artists working today. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2023, his career has been on a fast upward trajectory.

Shattered Dreams features Whyte’s striking nocturnal painting, Blackbirds singing in the dead of night, 2025, which has been acquired for Wolverhampton Art Gallery’s permanent collection, purchased with support from the Arts Council England/V&A Purchase Grant Fund, the Contemporary Art Society, City of Wolverhampton Council and Kemal and Tala Cingillioglu, 2025/26.

Blackbirds singing in the dead of night exemplifies Whyte’s exploration of the material possibilities of paint in expansive compositions, defined by vigorous, fluid brushstrokes. His imagined scenes convey the atmosphere of film stills, using layered compositions and dramatic contrasts of light and shade to evoke mood, sensation and psychological depth.

Whyte’s studio practice is grounded in an immersive engagement with his medium, and shaped by wide-ranging interests spanning literary fiction, music, mythology, cultural theory, ecology and contemporary and historic art. He develops ideas in writing and drawing, as well as in the physical process of painting. Shattered Dreams reveals a deep awareness of artistic precedents, from grand narrative history painting to surrealism, expressionism, and post-war painterly abstraction.

Whyte’s connection to Wolverhampton is deeply personal and formative. He has spoken about the importance of visits to Wolverhampton Art Gallery during his youth, which played a pivotal role in nurturing his creativity and introducing him to the possibilities of artistic expression. The acquisition of Blackbirds singing in the dead of night and the exhibition Shattered Dreams celebrate this journey and reinforce the Gallery’s role in inspiring future generations of artists.

About Shaqúelle Whyte

Shaqúelle Whyte (b. 2000, Wolverhampton) lives and works in London. He received a BA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art (2022) and an MA at the Royal College of Art (2023). In April 2026 he will present Shattered Dreams, his first institutional solo exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Other recent solo exhibitions include Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London (2024; 2025) and White Cube, Hong Kong (2026). He is currently included in Everything Now All At Once at Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, NC. Other recent group shows include Roots in the Sky, HOME Manchester, curated by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones (2025-2026); Being There, No 1 Royal Crescent, Bath (2024); Swimming, curated by Russell Tovey, GRIMM, Amsterdam (2024); Two x Two for AIDS and Art, The Rachofsky House, Dallas, TX (2024); and Present Tense, Hauser & Wirth, Somerset (2024). In 2024 Tate Britain presented a live conversation between the artist and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe.

At Frieze London 2025 his work was selected for The Contemporary Art Society’s Frieze Collections Fund, establishing an acquisition by Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. At Frieze London 2024, his work was selected for acquisition by the Arts Council Collection.
