More road resurfacing to improve journeys across Wolverhampton

Chapel Ash island was resurfaced in the summer.

More resurfacing is planned in the coming weeks as work continues to improve roads across the city.

Stowheath Lane, Dunstall Lane, Castlecroft Road and Nelson Avenue are next to be fully resurfaced and re-lined, with work at night where possible.

Wilkinson Avenue, Brierley Lane, Rose Street, Pond Lane, Chequerfield Drive and Chester Avenue will all benefit from surface treatment work.

It is part of planned work being carried out under the council’s £10 million Highway Capital Programme 2026/27.

Dozens of roads have seen resurfacing and other improvements over Spring and Summer including major routes like Chapel Ash island, Ring Road St George's and Stafford Rd/Three Tuns Lane island.

Councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, Cabinet Member for City Transport at City of Wolverhampton Council, said: "The work already carried out across the city is improving journeys for thousands of people on a daily basis but we know the hard work doesn't stop there.

"We will keep rolling out resurfacing and other treatments proven to help prevent potholes as we know just how important a safe and efficient highways network is to our residents and businesses.

"We can't resurface every road in the city at once but by continually targeting investment where it can have the greatest impact, we can steadily raise the standard of our roads.

"Pothole repairs will, of course, always be required and our dedicated crews are always out on the case fixing them in a timely manner, too."

Nelson Avenue is expected to be resurfaced over two days from Monday 9 November, Stowheath Lane over six nights from Wednesday 11 November, Castlecroft Road over two days from Monday 16 November and Dunstall Lane over two nights from Thursday 3 December. Re-lining will follow at all sites.

Surface treatment work in Wilkinson Avenue, Rose Street and Brierley Lane will be for one day only at each site between Sunday 2 November and Friday 6 November.

Surface treatment in Pond Lane, Chequerfield Drive and Chester Avenue will be for one day only at each site between Thursday 5 November and Tuesday 10 November, with re-lining to follow at all sites.

All work is if weather permits and residents will be kept updated via council social media channels and the Causeway One Network website Causeway one.network where traffic restrictions and diversions can be seen to help people plan their journeys.

This year's work builds on £35m invested in our highways over the last five years, with more than 560 square kilometres of carriageway resurfaced or treated.

The council also continues to repair potholes throughout the city, with more than 7,000 fixed so far this year. Many footpaths have also been reconstructed and resurfaced too.

As part of the highways capital programme, road safety schemes have been delivered including projects outside schools to help reduce casualties and improve safety for children and families.

More than 31,000 streetlights have also been converted to energy efficient LED technology over the past five years, reducing energy consumption and saving money with technology upgrades also carried out at council car parks.
