Wolverhampton rallies round family of father who died in Lidl supermarket crash

A fundraising page has been set up to help James's family

More than £13,000 has been donated to support the family of a man who died when a car crashed into the entrance of a Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton.

James Singh Jagpal, 39, a father of two, was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency services were called to the store on Finchfield Hill shortly before 6pm on Friday 23 October.

A fundraising page was set up to help cover funeral costs and has grown rapidly. It had passed £8,100 within two days and now stands at more than £13,000.

Sophie Jagpal, a family member who created the page, said no family should have to go through such a heartbreaking loss. She said: “In a moment, this family’s world has been turned upside down as they try to come to terms with a loss they could never have prepared for.”

She added that the aim was to bring friends, family and the wider community together so the family know they are not alone.

In a statement released through West Midlands Police, James’s family described him as a much-loved son and brother, a devoted partner of more than 20 years, and a loving father to two daughters. They remembered him for his kindness, generosity and wonderful sense of humour.

Two people who were seriously injured inside the store have since been discharged from hospital, police said. The driver, a woman in her 70s, has also left hospital and will be spoken to in due course. Four other people were treated by paramedics at the scene and discharged.

Floral tributes have been left outside the store, which remains closed while repairs are carried out. Lidl said it was saddened by the incident and that the store would stay shut until further notice.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the Finchfield Hill area on the evening of the crash and saw a blue Renault Zoe to get in touch. The death is not being treated as suspicious.
