A University of Wolverhampton graduate has been crowned Student Social Worker of the Year at the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2026.

Stacie Finnegan, who studied Social Work at the university, picked up the national title in recognition of her commitment to the profession and her potential to make a lasting difference to individuals, families and communities.

The awards, which are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, are widely regarded as the leading honours in the profession. They recognise excellence, innovation and dedication in social work across the UK.

Professor Diana Bannister, Head of the School of Education and Social Work at the university, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Stacie has been recognised as Student Social Worker of the Year. This is a tremendous achievement and reflects her professionalism, compassion and dedication to improving the lives of others.

“Social work is one of the most important professions in society, supporting people through some of life’s most challenging circumstances. To be recognised nationally in this way is a testament to Stacie’s hard work and commitment, and we are incredibly proud of her success.”

Ms Finnegan said winning the award was an honour she never expected when she began her studies.

She said: “The support I received from lecturers, placement supervisors and fellow students at the University of Wolverhampton helped me develop the confidence, knowledge and practical skills needed for the profession. My placement experiences were particularly valuable in showing me the impact social workers can have on people’s lives.

“This award is a reflection of everyone who supported me throughout my journey, and it has strengthened my determination to make a positive difference through my career in social work.”

The University of Wolverhampton prepares future social workers through a mix of academic study, professional placements and close partnerships with employers and community organisations.
